For the vast majority of business websites, especially those investing in SEO or Google Ads, Tag Manager is an essential part of the setup.
Common Mistakes with Google Tag Manager
- Not having it installed at all. Many business websites still have tracking codes scattered through their source code with no Tag Manager. This makes changes slow, expensive, and error-prone.
- Installing it but never using it. GTM is installed on the site, but all tracking is still hardcoded. The tool is there, but nobody is using it.
- Duplicate tags. The same tracking code is installed both in GTM and directly in the website code, causing double-counting in Analytics and inflated data. This is one of the most common issues we see during audits.
- No conversion tracking set up. GTM is installed and Analytics is connected, but nobody configured the conversion events. The tool is collecting pageview data but missing the actions that actually matter: form submissions, calls, and purchases.
- No access for the business owner. As with Analytics and Search Console, your GTM account belongs to your business. Make sure you have admin access, not just your developer or agency.

- You (the business owner) should have admin access. The GTM container belongs to your business. If your relationship with your developer or agency ends, you need to retain control of your tracking setup.
- Your SEO or marketing agency should have publish access. They need to add and update tags, configure conversion tracking, and troubleshoot issues.
- Your web developer should have at least read access. They may need to verify that the GTM container code is correctly installed on your site.

What Is the Data Layer?
The data layer is a JavaScript object on your website that holds structured information about the current page, user, or action. Tag Manager reads from the data layer to get values it needs to send to analytics tools. A purchase event on an ecommerce site typically pushes something like:

GTM listens for that push, fires a tag that sends the data to GA4, and the conversion shows up in your reports. Without a data layer, you would have to scrape values out of the page DOM, which is fragile and breaks every time the site changes. Most ecommerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento) push a data layer automatically; on bespoke sites your developer needs to build it.
How to Set Up Google Tag Manager (Five Minutes)
- Create a GTM account and container at
tagmanager.google.com. The container ID looks likeGTM-XXXXXX. - Install the container snippet on every page of your site — one part in the
<head>, one immediately after the opening<body>tag. WordPress users typically install Site Kit, Rank Math, or a dedicated GTM plugin. Shopify needs the snippet pasted into theme.liquid. - Add your first tag — usually a Google Tag (the GA4 base tag) firing on All Pages. Once published, GA4 starts receiving data from your site.
After install, every other tracking tag on your site (Google Ads, Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar) should be added through GTM rather than pasted directly into the site. That is the entire point of Tag Manager: one container, one source of truth, no developer needed for changes.
Preview and Debug Mode
Tag Manager’s Preview mode is the single most underused feature. Before you publish a new tag or trigger, click Preview, paste in your site URL, and Tag Manager opens a debug window that shows every tag that fires (and every tag that does not fire) as you click around your site. You can see the data layer state at each step, the values of every variable, and exactly which triggers matched. This is how you verify a setup actually works before pushing it live. Publishing without testing in Preview mode is how stores end up with broken ecommerce tracking for weeks before anyone notices.
Server-Side Google Tag Manager
Server-side GTM (sGTM) is a newer architecture where tracking requests are sent from the browser to a server you own, and that server forwards data to Google, Meta, TikTok, and so on. Why it matters in 2026:
- Ad-blocker resistance: requests appear to come from your own domain rather than google-analytics.com, so are not blocked by browser-level tracking protection.
- Faster page load: the client only loads one small script; all heavy tag logic runs server-side.
- Better data quality: Apple’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention and Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection don’t expire server-set cookies the same way they expire third-party cookies.
The trade-off is cost and complexity. Server-side GTM typically runs $40-$200/month for hosting (Google Cloud, Stape, Addingwell). For most small businesses, client-side GTM is still fine. For ecommerce stores spending $5,000+/month on ads, server-side recovers 10-20% of lost conversion data and usually pays for itself.
Consent Mode and GTM
Consent Mode v2 (required since March 2024 for European traffic) is configured through GTM. The flow: a consent management platform like Cookiebot or OneTrust pushes the user’s consent choices into the data layer, GTM reads those signals, and tags only fire if the user has granted the relevant consent (analytics_storage, ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization). For Australian businesses serving European traffic, this is non-optional. For AU-only businesses, it is not currently required but the Privacy Act review is moving toward EU-style requirements.
