How to Update a Google Business Profile: Posts, Services and Products (2026 Guide)
Google Business Profile (GBP) is one of the highest-leverage marketing channels for any Australian local business, and keeping it updated is one of the quickest wins in local SEO. This guide walks through the three most common Google Business Profile updates that any business owner or marketing team member can do themselves: publishing posts, editing services and managing products. It is the same process we use for our own clients at Rank Haus, converted from an internal Standard Operating Procedure so anyone can follow it.
The examples in the screenshots have been anonymised — the interface is Google’s and the workflow is identical regardless of business type.
Before You Begin
- You must have manager or owner access to the Google Business Profile you want to update.
- Log in to the correct Google account for the business.
- Have your post copy, images, and any scheduling details ready before starting.
- Find the profile by searching the business name in Google (for example, “Jane’s Bakery Fitzroy”) while logged in. The management panel appears above the search results.
Important: Always double-check you are editing the correct location if the business has multiple listings. There is no way to transfer edits between locations after the fact.
Part A: Creating and Scheduling Posts
GBP posts appear on the business profile in Google Search and Maps. Use them for updates, promotions, events and seasonal content. Posts expire after six months but remain visible in the profile’s posts archive.
Step 1: Open the Posts panel
From the GBP management panel, click Posts in the top navigation row.

Step 2: Start a new post
The Your posts panel opens. Click + Add post at the bottom.

Step 3: Choose the post type and add an image
At the top of the Add post form, select the post type:
- Update — general news, tips, or content (most common).
- Offer — a promotion or discount with optional coupon code and date range.
- Event — an event with title, date, and time.
Click Select images and videos to upload from your computer, or drag and drop a file into the upload area.
- Recommended image size: 1200 × 900 pixels (4:3 ratio). Minimum 400 × 300 pixels.
- Supported formats: JPG, PNG. Videos up to 30 seconds.

Step 4: Write the post description
Click the Description field and enter the post copy. Maximum 1,500 characters. Keep the first two lines compelling — they appear in the preview before the user clicks to expand. Include a clear call to action and relevant keywords naturally.

Step 5: Schedule the post (optional)
To schedule for a future date, toggle Schedule this post to on (the toggle turns blue). Select the date and time. If you do not toggle the schedule, the post will publish immediately when you click the Post button.

Step 6: Add a button (optional)
Under Add more details, click + Button to add a call-to-action button. Options include: Book, Order online, Buy, Learn more, Sign up, Call now. Enter the destination URL when prompted.

Step 7: Publish or schedule
Click Post to publish immediately, or Schedule if you enabled the scheduling toggle.

Tip: Schedule posts at least a day in advance where possible. Consistent posting (two to four times per month) signals an active business to Google and keeps the profile fresh for searchers. For more on the wider strategy behind local search, see our guide to local SEO for Australian businesses.
Part B: Editing Services
Services listed on a GBP profile help Google understand what the business offers and can appear directly in search results. Keeping services accurate and comprehensive improves visibility for relevant searches.
Step 1: Open the Services panel
From the GBP management panel, click Edit services in the second row of icons (below the main navigation).

Step 2: Review existing services
The Services panel lists all current services grouped by business category. Each service category can be expanded by clicking the arrow (>) to view or edit individual services. Additional categories appear below the primary category, each with their own + Add more services link and a Delete option.

Step 3: Add a new service
Click + Add more services under the relevant category. Google may suggest predefined services (for example, “Financing”). Click a suggestion to add it, or click + Add custom service to enter your own.

Step 4: Enter the custom service name
Type the service name (up to 120 characters). Click Save when done.

Step 5: Confirm the service was added
The new service appears in the list under its category. A yellow banner may appear: “Your edit is pending review. It may take up to one day to be published.” This is normal for new or edited services.

Step 6: Edit service details
Click the arrow next to a service to open its details. You can edit the Service name (up to 120 characters), set a Price or price range, and add a Service description (up to 300 characters). To remove a service, click Delete service at the bottom of the edit panel. Click Save after making changes.

Important: Only add services the business genuinely offers. Padding the list with irrelevant services can trigger a Google suspension review. Cross-reference the business website and service pages when updating.
Part C: Editing Products
GBP products appear in a dedicated tab on the business profile. They are useful for showcasing key offerings with images, descriptions and prices. Products are most commonly used by service businesses to highlight packages or key offerings alongside their standard services.
Step 1: Open the Products panel
From the GBP management panel, click Edit products in the second row of icons.

Step 2: Get started or add a product
If no products exist yet, the Products panel shows a Get started button. Click it to begin. If products already exist, you will see the product list with an option to add more.

Step 3: Fill in the product details
Complete the following fields:
- Product name — clear, keyword-rich name (up to 58 characters).
- Select a category — choose an existing category or create a new one to group related products.
- Product category — name for the new category if creating one (up to 58 characters).
- Photo — upload a product image (click the image area on the right).
- Product price (AUD) — optional, enter a fixed price or leave blank.
- Product description — describe the product or service package (up to 1,000 characters).
- Product landing page URL — optional link to the relevant page on the business website (up to 1,500 characters).
Click Publish to save the product.

Step 4: Edit or remove an existing product
Click on any existing product to edit its name, description, price, image, category or URL. To delete a product, open it and click the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top right, then select Delete.
Tip: Use products strategically for service businesses. List the top five to ten service packages with clear descriptions and links to the relevant service pages on the website. This creates additional entry points from the GBP listing to the business site.
Common Issues
- Post not appearing: Posts can take up to 24 hours to appear. If a post is rejected, check it does not contain prohibited content (phone numbers in images, misleading claims, or restricted content). Resubmit after editing.
- Services pending review: New or edited services may show “pending review” for up to one day. This is normal. If a service is rejected, simplify the name and try again.
- Services not saving: Ensure you click Save after each change. If the service name is too long or contains special characters, shorten it. If Google keeps reverting a service, it may conflict with the business category.
- Wrong location edited: If you have made changes to the wrong listing, repeat the steps on the correct location. There is no way to transfer edits between locations.
- Scheduled post did not publish: Check the scheduled posts list in the Posts panel. If the post shows as failed, edit and reschedule or publish manually.
- Product image not uploading: Ensure the image is JPG or PNG and under 5 MB. Try a different image if the upload keeps failing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I post on Google Business Profile?
Two to four posts per month is a sustainable cadence for most Australian businesses. Consistency matters more than volume — Google reads regular activity as a signal of an active business. Posts remain visible for six months but rotate out of the primary display faster than that.
Do GBP posts help SEO?
Indirectly, yes. Posts do not directly change your ranking on Google, but they lift engagement (clicks, direction requests, phone calls) which does correlate with better local pack visibility over time. A profile with regular posts also signals to Google that the business is actively managed.
What is the difference between GBP services and products?
Services describe what you offer (dental cleaning, bathroom renovations, business coaching). Products describe distinct offerings with images, descriptions and optional prices — often used to showcase specific packages, treatments or bundles. Services support keyword matching in local search results; products create richer visual entries with landing page links.
Can I schedule GBP posts in advance?
Yes. Inside the Add post form, toggle Schedule this post on and pick a future date and time. This is the native GBP scheduler and works reliably for most business categories.
Do I need to add products if I already have services?
No, products are optional. Service-based businesses (plumbers, lawyers, physios) can use products to highlight specific service packages with visuals and prices, but it is not required. Most small businesses benefit from adding five to ten products showcasing their most popular or highest-margin offerings.
How long do Google Business Profile edits take to appear?
Posts usually appear within minutes; occasionally up to 24 hours. Services and products may show “pending review” for up to one day for new or edited entries. Major changes to the business name, category or address can take longer, sometimes requiring re-verification.
